Indian Popcorn!
Here is a very short little clip showing one of the street vendors cooking "popcorn." There occasionally are street vendors who sell American style popcorn, but a taxi driver called this style of cooking popcorn. It is quite delicious, very inexpensive, and found wherever there are big groups of people. After your corn is sufficiently charred, the woman removes it from the fire, takes a slice of lime or lemon and dips the citrus wedge into a spicy masala mix of salt and various peppers. She then rubs the delicious spice mix onto your corn and it is served to you with a few husks to insulate your little fingers from the heat. Pretty delicious- I have had several!

maybe u can score some of this spice mix and try it on your dad's famous sweet corn next year?
ReplyDeleteoh yeah, do they look for a particular wood or brand of charcoal for this?
ReplyDeleteHa ha! Brand of charcoal.... yeah the kind that the guy brings around in a bucket to sell to them every day. I'm pretty sure they would cook it on whatever kind of wood they can find. I have seen the street vendors cutting branches off of trees in the city to use for little fires to perform various tasks such as cooking food and heating up water for "chai." Fortunately, they don't cook it using the cow patties, which I have seen neatly made into flat disks drying in the sun along certain low income neighborhoods. As far as the spice mix goes, the type of individual selling corn in the streets does not usually possess English skills. And as far as buying a bunch of spices, well... they are kinda heavy and are a semi hazard to carry around in a plastic bag in my backpack for three more months. Don't wanna get chili powder on my undies, ya know!
ReplyDeleteYou mean they dont rely on good ole Kingsford Charcoal! Shocked. I was really wondering if they burned down there own wood or just did as u said bought it from some other vendor for it. And then if they cared about type of wood if they burned their own down. There must be some differentiation - or is there not that level of vendor competition to score the few pennies they make. Hell after 3 months there - u may need spiced undies!
ReplyDeleteAs far as I can tell, they just burn whatever. There are people who sell wood. In each neighborhood there are stick vendors that have big piles of wood of assorted diameters which you can purchase for cooking fuel and what not. So I am sure that each locality has a preffered wood, but I wouldn't know the difference. And yes, there is a man that walks around with a bucket full of charcoal. Its hot, and the undies don't need to get any spicier!!!
